Earlier this month, South Park shocked the world when ViacomCBS announced that it was renewing Matt Stone and Trey Parker’s raunchy animated comedy through Season 30 — but that wasn’t all. This renewal deal also included 14 movies which would premiere exclusively on Paramount+. That’s right: 14. This mega renewal reportedly cost $900 million and guaranteed the show’s future through 2027. And at the Television Critics Association’s 2021 summer tour, Tanya Giles, Chief Programming Officer of ViacomCBS Streaming, announced that two of the South Park films are set to premiere by the end of 2021.
It’s not too unusual for South Park to get a multi-season renewal. Back in 2019, the series was renewed through 2022, and prior to that, it received a three season renewal in 2015. It’s also not surprising that Stone and Parker want to make more movies. The duo said as much in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter. Likewise, these past two years have marked a deviation from the show’s typical release strategy with Comedy Central premiering “The Pandemic Special” in September of 2020 and “South ParQ Vaccination Special” in March of 2021. What’s surprising is the sheer volume of content that 14-movie and six season deal promises.
Stone and Parker have never had a problem creating new episodes or seasons. In fact, South Park thrives on it. The show has long been praised and revered for its weeklong production schedule, a thankless process that keeps the series’ jokes always relevant. It’ll be interesting to see if this tried and true process will prevail with the addition of two movies a year or if this new toll will break it. Another question to consider is what these movies will look like. Will they be hourlong specials like the two aforementioned odes to the pandemic? Or will they be true features? We’re poised to learn the answer by the end of the year.
