Musical and comedy lovers, and also musical comedy lovers, rejoice: Apple TV+’s highly anticipated Schmigadoon! finally has a release date. The first two episodes of the Lorne Michaels produced series will premiere on Friday, July 16, with new episodes debuting weekly on Fridays thereafter.
And not only that, but the streamer revealed two new pictures from the series, and announced that none other than Martin Short will be guest starring as part of the packed cast.
For those not familiar with the ridiculously named series, it stars SNL‘s Cecily Strong and one half of Key & Peele — that would be Keegan-Michael Key — as a couple on a backpacking trip striving to reignite their relationship. Instead, they stumble onto a magical town that seems stuck inside a 1940s musical. And not only that, they learn they can’t leave until they find true love. True love? In a musical? Seems impossible.
The series is stacked from top to bottom with musical talent, beyond the prodigious pipes of Strong and Key. Also featured in the first season are Alan Cumming, Kristin Chenoweth, Aaron Tveit, Dove Cameron, Ariana DeBose, Fred Armisen, Jaime Camil, Jane Krakowski and Ann Harada, as well as the aforementioned Short.
Co-created by Ken Daurio and Cinco Paul, who is also showrunner and wrote the the original songs for the series, Schmigadoon! is directed and executive produced by someone who knows his way around a weird premise: Barry Sonnenfeld. The award-winning director also helped create surreal comedic worlds for The Addams Family and its sequel, Men in Black 1-3, and though we don’t talk about it, Wild Wild West. On the TV side of things, Sonnenfeld directed the iconic pilot of Pushing Daisies, as well as Netflix’s Series of Unfortunate Events. Point being, if anyone can make a ’40s musical work on Apple’s streaming service, it’s Sonnenfeld.
Cecily Strong also serves as producer on the project, and Ken Daurio serves as consulting producer and writer. Andrew Singer executive produces with Lorne Michaels on behalf of Broadway Video.
The first season of the series is six episodes long, so expect it to stream starting on July 16, and wrap up on August 13. You’ll most likely have a song in your heart long after that, though. Check out the two released pics from the series, below:
