While a real estate agent is showing the Chemist a house, he mentions that he saw Norman Mailer bite off Rip Torn’s ear in one of the rooms. That’s a reference to Mailer’s Maidstone. The 1970 independent drama was written, directed, and produced by Mailer and follows fictional famous filmmaker Norman Kingsley as he runs for president. The movie received generally negative reviews, but it gained infamy because of an improvised fight between Mailer and Torn. While the cameras rolled, Torn hit Mailer in the head with a hammer, intending to kill his character. That led to an actual brawl that cost Torn his ear.
Though this bizarre fight is an actual part of film history, it was largely filmed in upstate New York. Mailer did spend some time in Provincetown, but four locations in the Hamptons were mostly used during production.
