25 years after the fact, Happy Gilmore’s still got it. On Tuesday, Adam Sandler celebrated the 25th anniversary of Happy Gilmore by recreating his character’s iconic golf swing. In a surprise to no one, Adam Sandler’s Happy Gilmore swing immediately went viral, and it didn’t take long for the video to make its way to villain Shooter McGavin, played by Christopher McDonald. The price is wrong, bitch!
Adam Sandler is no stranger to the golf course, but yesterday, he changed up his swing in honor of beloved comedy Happy Gilmore, which was released in 1996. In a video posted Tuesday afternoon, Sandler teed up a drive, explaining that “it’s been 25 years” since he last attempted Happy’s running-start golf swing. “I’m scared,” he said, as he approached the tee. “Shooter McGavin, this is for you.”
The comedian absolutely bombed the drive — or as he put it, “smashed” it — down the fairway, but as any golfer worth their salt knows, you drive for show, and putt for dough. Of course, McDonald’s Shooter McGavin was quick to remind Happy Gilmore of this fact in a follow-up video. “Nice drive, Gilmore. 25 years, huh?” said McDonald, as he set up a putt in his living room. “Oh, yeah, it’s all about the short game.”
Clearly, Shooter has been practicing his tap-tap-tapping in: his putt easily sailed into the cup a few yards away, prompting some more gloating on McDonald’s part. “Money!” he said, flipping the camera back towards his face. “Shooter, still got it.”
“Well, thank you to all the fans, and thank you to you, Adam Sandler,” continued McDonald/Gavin. “Why don’t you just meet me at the ninth green at nine, Gilmore? A little secret of the pros. Oh, and Gilmore? Wear something nice.”
If Sandler does show up at the ninth green at nine, let’s hope things go a bit better for him this time around. No one likes a soggy gold jacket.
Happy Gilmore is available to stream on HBO Max.
